Southern Bay Racing News You Can Use   # 477

SBRNYCU is an independent weekly publication of southern Chesapeake Bay racing happenings. Founded in April, 2000.

Try sailing - it's NOT easy! - Bill Schanen, SAILING Magazine

MERIDIAN  won the Bolero Trophy  for first to finish in PHRF Fleet in the Lauderdale to Key West Race.  At first, race organizers mistakenly gave the trophy to another boat, but, once the error was pointed out, the prestigious trophy was presented to the rightful owners at a post-race party.  Good thing.  Sledd Shelhorse's  Meridian crew earned that silver!

Jobson was "SPECTACULAR!"   "Spectacular!" is  how Chesapeake Bay sailor and premier newscaster Walter Cronkite described America's Cup boats and sailboats in general.  Mr. Cronkite's boat, Assignment, once was a frequent visitor to the southern Bay.  Many southern Bay sailors have "had dinner with Walter", i.e. slurping oysters at the restaurant on the dock at Tidewater Yachts (Portsmouth) at the same time Mr. Cronkite was dining there.  Thursday night, The Mariners' Museum brought another "Spectacular" to the southern Bay.  World famous and much beloved Gary Jobson shared stories and opinions and a wonderful video collection with the almost 200 folks who crammed the room.  College sailing team coaches, sailing school owners, sailmakers, savvy old timers, hot young bloods, and every stripe of racer in between was there, including the Hampton University sailing team.  A night with Gary Jobson was a moment to treasure, especially when it was in your own backyard.  Kudo's to TMM for sponsoring the event.

Key West Race Week results.  Lucky Dog, (skipper Travis Weisleder, Fishing Bay, VA ),  one of three  "purely"  southern Bay boats at KWRW,  finished 6th in the 14 boat  J105 class.   Kent Mitchell's (Bald Head Island, NC)  Cape Fear 38, My Velocity, was 5th in the  PHRF 2 fleet and Teamwork , J/122, skipper Robin Team (Beaufort, NC), was 6th in the IRC 2 fleet.   L'Outrage (Bruce Gardner, Annapolis) finished 3rd in the  PHRF 2 fleet with southern Bay tactician, Ken Saylor on board.  Mark Wheeler, sailed as navigator on IRC 1 fleet Vela Veloce (6th place), and southern Bay expatriate Steven Hunt was tactician on the 3rd place Melges 24, WTF (Alan Field, Marina del Rey, CA) in that 21 boat fleet.

A sailing season plan suggestion.  Multiple day regattas that are within striking distance are great for crews and budgets.  Consider including  the following in your plan for the 2010 summer (June-July-August):

June 4-5           SOUTHERN BAY RACE WEEK  for the BLACK SEAL CUP(Hampton, VA)  www.blacksealcup.com

July  18 - 20     SCREWPILE LIGHTHOUSE CHALLENGE  (Solomons Island, MD)  www.screwpile.net or www.splc.us

August 14-15   CAPE CHARLES CUP, www.CCCup.net

These are jewels for your 2010 racing season crown.  Noodle it over.  Get ready to do some racin'!

MURPHY'S LAW:   Dear Reader,    Murphy has not been heard from since the start of the last Key West Race Week party.  Southern Bay expatriate racer Ray Houle reported that  actual sighting.  The Murphster has been AWOL  before, and we are fairly confident of  Murphy the Racing Beagle's eventual return after a brief rehab.    The Editor      /S/  Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.
